Washington Gala Apple

Gala apples are mostly red with over a yellow, pinkish-orange background shades. Gala apples are fairly resistant to bruising and are sweet, grainy, with a mild flavor. Gala Apples have a thinner skin apple, when compared to the other apples.

Gala Apples are also considered to be a very soft eating apple due to their lack of crispness. Galas have gained popularity among consumers in the past years. Snacking and salads are primary uses. Gala apples were developed in New Zealand in the 1920s. Gala apples are grown from September through June, but like most apples are available almost all year through the use of cold storage and controlled atmosphere storage.

California Gala Apples is available until October. It is a pink-red dessert apple and is therefore usually eaten fresh. Royal Galas are usually harvested in early to late February.

Gala apples are harvested in mid August through early September and are available September through May, being kept in specialty refrigerated C.A. rooms.
